Roofing Materials

Copper Roofing

Copper outlasts the mortgage, the owner and usually the building, and it turns from bright penny to green over about twenty years of Iowa weather.

What It Is

The oldest metal roofing material still in use. It work hardens, solders rather than seals, and forms its own protective patina instead of corroding through.

Where It Wins

  • A century of service is normal
  • Needs no coating and no maintenance
  • The patina is genuinely beautiful and cannot be faked

Where It Does Not

  • The most expensive common roofing material there is
  • Runoff stains stone and concrete below it green
  • Very few crews can solder a copper roof properly anymore

In the Quad Cities

Usually seen here on bay roofs, porch roofs, turrets and valley metal on the historic houses rather than a whole roof. A copper bay on a restored Victorian is money well spent.
