Roofing Materials

Clay Tile

Clay tile is fired earth that holds its color for decades, and in a freeze and thaw climate like this one the grade of tile matters more than anywhere warm.

What It Is

Tiles shed the water and the underlayment beneath them does the real waterproofing. In the Midwest the tile must be rated for severe freeze and thaw exposure. A tile made for Arizona will spall here in a decade.

Where It Wins

  • A century of life is realistic
  • Color goes all the way through and does not fade
  • Completely fireproof

Where It Does Not

  • Very heavy, so the structure has to be checked
  • Freeze and thaw destroys the wrong grade of tile
  • Walking on it breaks it, so maintenance is careful work
  • Uncommon here, so fewer crews and slower repairs

In the Quad Cities

There are Spanish Revival houses in this area wearing clay tile and they look wonderful. If you have one, insist on a grade one severe weathering tile and nothing less.
