Cedar Shakes
Cedar shakes are split rather than sawn, so every one has a rough uneven face, and that is what gives a shake roof its deep shadow.

What It Is
Hand split or taper split western red cedar, laid over spaced sheathing or a breathable underlayment so the wood can dry from both faces. The gap is the design, not a fault.
Where It Wins
- Nothing else looks like it, including the synthetics that copy it
- Cedar has natural oils that resist rot and insects
- Correct on a great many older Quad Cities houses
Where It Does Not
- Needs real maintenance, including cleaning and occasional treatment
- Fire rating is a genuine issue unless the whole assembly is treated
- Moss and algae on shaded slopes in a humid river valley
- Few crews left who install it properly
In the Quad Cities
Check your local fire code and your insurer before committing. Some carriers price a wood roof in this region harshly and a few will not write it at all.
